2 days Snowshoes in Aigüestortes National Park

The planned route goes across the heart of the Pyrenees in the centre of an impressive topography. There we find a beautiful example of high mountains: Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. It is not only an admirable geological place but also an iconic water paradise: more than 200 pools and uncountable streams and springs flow through the area (even though during winter season, most probably they will be frozen). It is located on the most north-western zone of Catalonia, in the so-called Axial Pyrenees, and it is divided between different regions (Alta Ribagorça, Pallars Sobirà, Pallars Jussà and Val d’Aran). These regions form a harmonious combination of valleys, mountains, lakes, forests and meadows. In addition it is the only natural area in Catalonia which holds the protection title of “National Park”.

The route we will take passes through the lake area of the Colomers.

Day 1: We will start the route at the Bòrda Montadí which is where you arrive by car in winter and where you will park. From here, with snowshoes on our feet, we will enter the black pine forests to the Banhs de Tredós and to the Pletiu dera Montanheta where we will take a break for lunch. Once we have eaten, we will climb the last part to the Colomers Refuge where we will spend the night.

Route: 11 km.

Elevation gain: 750 mts.

Elevation drop: 50 mts.

Day 2: Once we have breakfast at the magnificent Colomers Refuge we will tour the area and visit 7 beautiful lakes in the National Park and where we will enjoy spectacular views. On the way back to the car we will make a stop for lunch.

Route: 14 km.

Elevation gain: 250 mts.

Elevation drop:  950 mts.

• Activity duration: 7 hours per day.
